Vitamin D

Many people do not know the value of Vitamin D, and they also do not know there are very few foods that contain Vitamin D. It is very important for their health because it affects their body by absorbing calcium. Therefore, it makes their bones stronger, their immune system healthier and some diabetes easier to maintain. The average recommended dietary allowance is 400 IU per day for children aged 0-14 months, the average recommended dietary allowance is 600 IU per day for people aged 1-70 years and the average recommended dietary allowance is 800 IU per day for people aged over 70.

CBC TV News research shows that vitamin D could extend and improve people's lives. People over the age of 50 who took 500 IU of Vitamin D had a 7% lower risk of death. Furthermore, vitamin D may block cancer cell proliferation or improve your blood vessels and your immune system functions. The Canadian Cancer Society suggested that you should take 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily during the fall and winter months, in consultation with a health-care provider. In 2009 the U.S. National Cancer Institute and other agencies started a study designed to determine whether vitamin D and fish oil could lower a healthy person's risk of getting cancer, heart disease or having a stroke. This study will take 5 years and after that they will hopefully know the answer.

This article about Vitamin D by The Skin Cancer Foundation sets out that a small amount of vitamin D can come from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation but that this creates a dilemma because UV rays can cause skin cancer. Research show that some sun is good for you because it prevents some types of cancer such as breast cancer. On the another hand, research shows that sun is not good for you. So if you cannot be in the sun, then how do you get your Vitamin D. You can get your Vitamin D by eating oily fish, fortified dairy products and cereals, and supplements.

The Natural News Network contains 385 Vitamin D featured articles. The article I have selected here is
“Dark-Skinned Immigrants to Canada Urged to Take Vitamin D Supplements” (Huff. 2010).  This article explains that the medical field is urging dark skinned immigrants who come to Canada to supplement their diet with Vitamin D. These Immigrants come from countries that are warmer and sunnier than Canada. Through their ancestry, they have a skin trait that prevents them from absorbing too much sun and also prevents sun damage. There is less sun in Canada so they do not get enough sun; therefore less sun, less Vitamin D. It is recommended that they take 1000 IU of Vitamin D per day to keep them heath while in Canada.

The next article from The Natural News Network is “Vitamin D helps diabetics maintain healthy blood sugar levels” Benson. J. (2011). It shows that Vitamin D can help diabetics by reducing their blood sugar levels. They had three tests groups of 90 people who ate three types of yogurt. They are one of the group ate yogurt without added vitamin D, the second group ate a vitamin D-fortified yogurt, and the final group ate a vitamin D-fortified yogurt with added calcium. And when they got the results of the three groups, they found that two tests groups had a seven percent decrease in blood sugar levels. Further test prove the same.

The next article from The Natural News Network is “Help reduce your risk of breast cancer with vitamin D Benson. J. (2011). It shows that there is another link between high vitamin D intake and a reduced risk of breast cancer. The finding shows a reduction in tumor and overall cancer growth in those people who already have the disease. They also found that vitamin D played a critical role in the preventing and treating of the disease. Research   also found that Vitamin D helped to stop the development and growth of breast cancers. At present, in the US there are two important human trials on vitamin D being conducted to prove what previous studies have found about the effect of Vitamin D in high doses in preventing and treating disease in humans.

The next article from The Natural News Network is called” Take vitamin D during pregnancy for your baby” (Dr. Randall.2011).An association between low vitamin D levels and respiratory problems in infants has been revealed in a new study. Low levels of vitamin D discovered in cord-blood led to a higher risk of respiratory infections during the first months after birth and a higher risk of wheezing episodes throughout early childhood. Between 2006 and 2009, four studies showed that the babies of mothers who took vitamin D supplements and who ate vitamin D rich foods during pregnancy showed a decreased incidence of wheezing and/or asthma (Erkkola, 2000; Miyake, 2010).This was the first study to test the level of vitamin D at birth and to associate it with the occurrence of respiratory symptoms. Even several years after birth babies that had a low cord-blood level of vitamin D where associated with wheezing. There are several possible reasons for this finding. Vitamin D is needed for healthy immune system function and is necessary to initiate immune mechanisms while the baby is still in the womb or soon after birth. In conclusion, vitamin D is important for women who are pregnant and as well it is important to take vitamin D afterwards. Adequate sun exposure is needed by babies or  babies should be given vitamin D as a supplement starting during infancy. The dosages of vitamin D3 supplementation commonly recommended during the winter months are 35 IU per pound of weight for babies, 2,000 IU for toddlers and older children, and 5,000 IU for adults. Vitamin D supplementation can usually be suspended in the summer if children spend a lot of time in the sun.

In summary, many people do not know the value of Vitamin D, and they also do not know there are very few foods that contain Vitamin D. It is very important for their health because it affects their body by absorbing calcium. Therefore, it makes their bones stronger, their immune system healthier and some diabetes easier to maintain. The average recommended dietary allowance is 400 IU per day for children aged 0-14 months, the average recommended dietary allowance is 600 IU per day for people aged 1-70 years and the average recommended dietary allowance is 800 IU per day for people aged over 70.So, the medical field recommends that Vitamin D is essential for everyone.
